THE TUFF VILLAGES: Pitigliano and Sovana
You may start your visit from Pitigliano! Walking through narrow alleys and ancient arches, you will led to Saint Paul’s and Peter’s Cathedral, belonging to the eighteenth century. Another important spot is the Medicean Aqueduct, built in 1545 by the Orsini family to carry the water to the inhabited area from the close creeks. The itinerary terminates with the Rocca Aldobrandesca, originally an ancient monastery, that turned into the Orsini Castle. It is also suggested a quick stop to the ancient Jewish district (for that reason it is also known as the Little Jerusalem. If you continue towards Sovana, you will discover ancient palaces, ,that will tell you about the ancient “Suana” : Palazzo Bourbon del Monte (XIII secolo), Santa Maria Maggiore Church (XII – XIII century), the Archive’s Palace, Pretorio Palace and the Duomo.
